FAQs

Here you will find answers to all your most pressing questions.

What is BUTTER?

BUTTER is a Black-led fine art fair created by GANGGANG that centers the care and economic viability of artists across the African diaspora. A blueprint for equity in the arts, BUTTER has set a new industry precedent with 100% of artwork sales going to artists.

Founded in Indianapolis in 2021 by GANGGANG, BUTTER 2026 will be the sixth iteration of the no-commission fair, showcasing the work of emerging and established artists from Indiana and across the world. Unlike any other art fairs in the U.S., 100% of artwork sales proceeds go back to the artists.

Taking place September 3–6, 2026 in The Stutz Building in downtown Indy, BUTTER features 53 emerging, mid-career, independent, and established artists, showcasing an intentionally-curated collection of contemporary artworks over the holiday weekend.

How is BUTTER different from other art fairs?

Serving as a new model for youth access and economic justice, the no-commission fine art fair gives 100% of the proceeds from art sales to the artists, who pay no fee to participate.

BUTTER works to make art accessible, presenting the work with proper context, as one of the country’s most celebrated and impactful new art experiences.

Guests 18 and under are always free at BUTTER, supporting arts education for the next generation.

Are kids still free?

Yes! Students 18 and under have free admission to BUTTER and do not need to purchase tickets. Students simply need to obtain a wristband at check-in prior to entering the fair.

Can anyone buy art?

Yes! The goal of the immersive exhibition is to sell or loan 100% of the artworks and to grow the market of art art collectors. Pieces range in price from $200 – $25,000, offering a wide range of options for buyers looking to add to their collections.

What is MELT?

MELT is Indy’s late-night dance party — two floors, bass ’til 2AM, and a room that turns all the way up. It’s the after-party born out of BUTTER: the fair sends the signal, MELT turns it to heat.

How can my art be considered for BUTTER?

BUTTER is a fine art fair curated with intention. Every artist featured in the fair is selected by our curators. We do not operate on an open call model—instead, we trust the vision and expertise of our curatorial team to shape the artist roster each year.

We do welcome submissions though, so that we can better equip our curators with new waves of artists to consider. If you’re an artist interested in being part of future BUTTERs, we invite you to submit your portfolio via the portal below. While submission does not guarantee inclusion, it will ensure that your work is seen by our curatorial committee.
